It's finally here. But is it really? In today's America, someone's always running for the next election.
There might be a break in campaigning after Tuesday. Fish may also float into the sky just for the halibut. It's more likely we won't even know the big winner by the time I'm scrambling to meet next week's deadline.
I pray that is not the case. Won't you join me prayer warriors?
First, let's clear this up. Columnists here don't endorse and if you want to know which way I'm leaning on election day, all my columns are on the ANE website (www.news-expressky.com). You'll figure it out.
I do have a few observations from the incessant insane/inane (you choose) political ad campaigns we get to watch from Ohio and West Virginia. There are some things to point out.
There are two kinds of patriots: the kind that plays football around Boston and the kind that wore a uniform in defense of their country. I'm not a patriot in either sense. It's likely you aren't either, since we haven't had a draft since I was 14.
Definition #1 for patriot in Webster's reads: Someone who loves, supports and DEFENDS their country.
If you made the choice to serve in the U.S. military, you have the right to call yourself a patriot. The rest of you who make that claim are sad pretenders and an insult.
Okay I've needed to get that one off my chest. Here's another nugget for you.
Not one job has been shipped overseas by a politician. Absolutely zero, zilch, nada. There has NEVER been a job shipped overseas by an American politician. How do I know? Because businesses are who hire in America, not politcians.
And if you don't get that, you misunderstand one of the most fundamental aspects of how our entire system operates. Politicians might be able to make it easier for businnesses to relocate to Guatemala or China or Saudi Arabia, but its the businesses that make that choice.
Another term for private school is profit center. Granted, the best private schools in this country are non-profits, but the majority of private schools are only about making money, like the one a certain presidential candidate had to pay $25,000,000 in a class action judgements a few years back. The last place public funds need to go is private education. Public money for billionaires.
I for one think Elon Musk is getting enough of your money. He's your real immigration problem in a nutshell.
Finally, Pike countians are missing out on a truly rare election treat. The unfortunate passing of incumbent Johnnie Turner last week leaves the race for 29th District Senate seat without candidates as of election day.
The only solution was to open the election to write-in candidates. Potential candidates had 24 hours to register as a write-in, in person, in Frankfort. Once the dust settled, 11 individuals from Bell, Harlan, Letcher, Knott and Floyd had jumped into the deep end.
There are ten men and one woman in the race. I can't figure out how voters will differentiate between them. Hope their spelling is right!
